We at Morrie’s love finding organizations to support through donations of time, money, or other resources. We often work with organizations like Perspectives and Make-A-Wish, but this week we gathered in the MHCC Dojo to kick off a new partnership with PAB’S PACKS. PAB’S is an organization that provides backpacks full of comfort items to teens that spend a lot of time in hospitals due to chronic illnesses. The founders, Pia and Abbie, are two remarkable teenage girls who came up with the idea after having their own experiences with long hospital stays. The lifelong friends were grateful to have each other, as well as family and friends, as a support system through their hospital visit, but they noticed that some of the other patients weren’t in the same boat. Amelia Island Auction Top Picks – MHCC

By |2016-03-09T08:11:01-05:00March 8th, 2016|Cars We'd Like to Own|1 Comment

Car we’d most like to drive across the country in: 1957 Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Tour de France Not only is this Ferrari 250 TdF drop-dead gorgeous but it has actual racing pedigree at Spa, Monza, and in the actual Tour de France that this car gets its name from. We’d happily use this car for vintage events like Mille Miglia to tear across the Italian countryside in the utmost style. RM Sotheby’s didn’t provide any auction estimates but style like this certainly doesn’t come cheaply. […]

Start Seeing Motorcycles! Look Twice…Save a Life

By |2016-03-09T09:00:55-05:00March 8th, 2016|Driving Experience|0 Comments

As a motorcyclist myself I hope nearly everyone has seen this bumper sticker on Minnesota roads. If you haven’t you might want to keep reading on. The weather is starting to turn and that means it’s time to start sharing the road with everyone. On an average day in 2014 there were a reported 215 crashes on Minnesota roads, that is per day! Of these crashes there were a reported 361 fatalities which has slightly decreased year after year, but unfortunately there were 46 motorcyclists who lost their lives in 2014. While all motorcyclists know the dangers of riding, people should to be aware of how to help avoid crashes and makes sure lives aren’t put in danger when they don’t need to be. The best information we can offer is that if you are a motorcyclist make sure you are riding smart. Always wear the appropriate riding gear and please for your own safety wear a helmet. The Office of Traffic Safety has a great list of tips to keep in mind as Spring approaches: Motorists are advised to watch carefully for motorcycles in traffic and always look twice before turning or changing lanes. Riders are advised to wear full, brightly-colored protective gear, including a DOT-approved helmet. Riders should travel at safe speeds, pay attention, maintain a two-second following distance and ride sober. Riders should seek safety training. We at Morrie’s care about the safety of motorists on the road and want to make sure you and your family are safe [...]

What’s Going on 3/4-3/6

Tribute Night at Amsterdam Bar and Hall – Friday, March 4th Unless you have a Delorean and can time travel back to the early nineties it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to hear Weezer’s entire Blue Album, Alice in Chains’ Dirt and Nirvana’s Nevermind performed live from start to finish.  Fortunately, you won’t need Marty McFly’s help this weekend because all three albums will be performed atAmsterdam Bar and Hall’s Tribute night. All this for just $10. MMA at Mystic – Friday, March 4th The last fight we saw at a casino was between two seniors trying to stake their claim on a lucrative penny slot. This weekend you can witness more intense fighting when the MMA heads to Mystic Lake. We’re not big on fighting, but you probably knew that since we’re looking for a Volkswagen Hippie Bus. Bedrace for bridging – Saturday, March 5th There’s nothing quite like snuggling up in a warm bed --- while hurtling down a snowy ski slope. If this sounds like your idea of fun you have to check out the Subway Bed Race for Bridging. This annual winter extravaganza pairs mattresses of all sizes with exuberant individuals looking for a different type of winter activity. Minnesota Roller Girls Home Season Championship – Saturday, March 5th Hell on wheels. That’s what we’d call our roller derby team if we had one. Alas, we don’t so we have to resort to watching others play. We’re in luck because theMinnesota Roller Girls Home Season Championship [...]

Should they stay or should they tow?

By |2016-03-01T17:55:11-05:00March 1st, 2016|New Additions|0 Comments

It’s always been our plan to cycle cars in and out of the MHCC fleet to keep things fresh and appeal to potential renters’ interest.  Last week we assembled a small group of MHCC members, staff, friends and familty to permanently seal the fate for a handful of our cars in what we called “Should they stay or should they go.”  (Cue the Clash song on the stereo) Attendees were given a list of eight cars to vote out of the fleet.  Each person had three votes.  When the votes were tallied it was clear that three cars will be moving on. The first is the 1993 Cadillac Allante.  It’s a really nice car, but there’s been little interest in it. […]

What’s in a name?

By |2016-03-02T11:12:10-05:00March 1st, 2016|Community|0 Comments

You’d be surprised at the number of things that people do in, around and in relation to their cars.   This inevitably happens for a reason — a large percentage of big life moments relate to or revolve around cars.  I’ve included a handful of car related happenings below. 90% of people sing in their cars 54% have kissed or made-out in their cars 38% had their car be part of their wedding 28% of people have named their car 27% made love in their car It would be a little uncomfortable if I talked about a few of the stats above and for the sake of keeping things PG I’ll stick to the topic of naming. I fall into the 28% who’ve named a car. I first named a car “Speedy” when I four or five years old.  While I’m not sure I’ve named a car since then I know plenty of people who have.  Amber named her Mini Cooper Winnie, like Winnie Cooper.  Get it?  Joseph named his Ford Fiesta ST Shadow.  Pretty mystical, huh?  As long as I’ve known her my friend Steph has named her cars and her husband’s cars — even cars she didn’t buy had names. Like Charlie the Mini Countryman that wasn’t meant to be.  Or Scooter, Hank, Arnold, George and a handful of others. The MHCC fleet of cars has not been immune to names either and below you’ll find a rundown of the current cars that have names. […]

To Grom or not to Grom, that is the Grom.

By |2016-03-01T11:00:24-05:00March 1st, 2016|Two Wheeled Tuesdays|1 Comment

I have always been interested in motorcycles but with my first love being automobiles, two wheels have always taken a back seat (see what I did there). I did come close to buying a Yamaha R6 about 12 years ago, but decided that wasn’t the best “starter” bike. I hadn’t really thought about buying a motorcycle since—until I was at The Hawk with Brian Redman this summer. I was taking pictures of Honda motorcycles to taunt my coworker Adam, who loves all things on two wheels, especially Hondas. I took a picture of a little sport bike not really knowing what it was, and Adam’s text back was, “steal it”. I thought it was neat, a little sport bike with a 125cc engine that would be perfect as a pit bike for race weekends. I didn’t really think about it again until I was Circuit of the Americas for a World Racing League race over Valentine’s day weekend, and that’s where my love affair with Groms officially began. Who would have thought I would come home to start the search for a two-wheeled girlfriend. […]

What’s Going On – 02/23

By |2016-02-25T09:23:10-05:00February 23rd, 2016|Events|0 Comments

A shortlist of upcoming events that piqued our interest   Adult Coloring Club – Thursday, February 25th Who says coloring should only be for kids? The Coloring Club MPLS gives artistic adults an opportunity to put their colored pencils to use, which is good for people like Amber (one of our graphic designers) who have “coloring degrees” and want to keep up on their skills. Throw in $5 beers from Eastlake Craft Brewery (the event host) and coloring sheets from local artists and you can’t go wrong. WinterFest at the Union Depot – Friday, February 26th When he was in town last week Vice President Joe Biden had nothing but good things to say about St. Paul’s Union Depot.  If that’s not reason enough to plan a visit maybe a little beer might persuade you. This Friday the Minnesota Craft Brewers guild is hosting Winterfest, a tribute to Minnesota beer. Chase out the winter chill with a multitude of Winter Warmers, hearty food, beer education, entertainment and music Tech Fest 2016 – Saturday, February 26th We’re all for introducing our youth to engineering, mechanics and hands-on technology. If we don’t who is going to fix all of these old cars we’ve collected? All kidding aside, The Works Museum is hosting a neat family engineering and technology fair offering hours of technology exploration for the whole family. Consider it a good alternative to sitting home on the couch. Red Bull Crashed Ice – February 26th and February 27th The icy spectacle [...]

Lap Around the Web – Week of February 22nd

By |2016-02-23T11:02:54-05:00February 23rd, 2016|Lap Around the Web|0 Comments

Just last week we got to thinking how crazy it must have been driving any one of the MHCC rentals in the snow back in the day. Moreover, we can’t imagine what it must’ve been like to ice race some of them, but this neat footage from the ice races at the 1954 St. Paul Winter Carnival gives us a unique peek. Be sure to think of these guys freezing their rears off as you slip slide away in the snow that’s forecasted for later this week. If the term Vulcan immediately gets you thinking about extraterrestrial humanoids or St. Paul Winter revelers it’s time for a little redefinition. The Vulcan is Aston Martin’s track-only, One-77 derived answer to the McLaren P1 and boy is it cool. One lucky bloke at Top Gear Magazine was the first to get his hands on one and his experience driving the firing breathing beast here. If you’re not one for reading you can skip right to some on-track footage. This week Haas Formula 1 made its series debut taking to the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the first official tests of the season. Haas F1 represents America’s first American team in 30 years and that gives us more than enough reason to cheer them on this season. Here are a few more reasons to get excited about Haas F1.
