Let me start off this blog post about a Ford Flex by saying, the Flex has never really appealed to me. Although I like the Honda Element, the Ford Flex seemed too similar to a hearse for my liking. When they first came out, my dad and I would make fun of each one we saw. Then, while planning a trip out to Colorado, I came to the realization that the Flex would be the perfect car.
When I first started looking at rental cars on Turo, I knew I wanted something with AWD since we would be in the mountains, preferably a Subaru. But the more I thought about it, the more a Subaru didn’t make sense. We needed to transport 5 people, 2 snowboard bags, and 4 suitcases all in one vehicle. After much debate, I decided to go for the boxy, hearse-like Flex and rented it for our trip.
As soon as we arrived and checked out the vehicle, I was immediately surprised by how much space it had. The third row of seats folds flat into the floor, so when they’re up, you have extra storage space. We were able to fold down only the right side of the second and third row so we had room for the snowboard bags, and still had enough seating for everyone in our group.
I’ve heard the Flex called a “giant wagon”, and after driving it, I’d have to say that’s pretty accurate! Because of the boxy shape, I was able to see all around me, without much of a blind spot. The car itself was easy to drive, and surprisingly, wasn’t much more difficult to park than my GLI.
After a week in the Ford Flex, I can definitely say I was surprised by how much I liked it! It was easy to drive, had ample storage and seating space, and had all the features I needed. If you have a large family, or just want a vehicle that doesn’t sacrifice space for seating (or vice versa), you should absolutely check out the Ford Flex.
